National Catholic Forensic League's
Grand National Tournament News:
Ten students from the Catonsville High School Speech &
Debate Team traveled to Albany, New York, on Memorial Day
weekend for the National Catholic Forensic League’s Grand
National Tournament, on 23-24 May 2009. About 3,000 students
represented public, private, and parochial high schools in
the competitions.
Sam Gruber - Lincoln/Douglas Debate
Matt Storrs - Original Oratory
Emily Renda - Original Oratory
Zoe Camp - Original Oratory
Emily Nicaise - Oral Interpretation of Literature
Sacoria Macon - Oral Interpretation of Literature
Ellen Skirvin & Sondra Boyle - Duo Interpretation of
Literature
Joe Mayhew & Sean Molony - Duo Interpretation of
Literature
Unfortunately, none of the CHS competitors won awards
against their tough opponents but good times were had by
all.
Matt Storrs also qualified to compete his Original
Oratory presentation in the National Forensic League’s
National Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, on 14-19 June
2009.
The Team is always looking for CHS students who are
interested in developing their speech or debate skills. In
addition to weekly meetings, the team participates in six
local tournaments and three out-of-state tournaments during
the school year. Selected team members qualify for District,
State, and National tournaments at the end of the regular
season. Team parents are encouraged to judge competitions
and to help with fund-raising activities to defray costs of
the away tournaments. |

On February
7th, the Speech and Debate team finished up its regular
season with great news:
-
14 of our students will be
going to the state championship rounds for the 2008-2009
year!
-
CHS will have finalists in all areas
of competition on March 21st, and we expect to see
some of them win at the state level and then go on to the
national competition in May.
