AVID

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national academic program dedicated to helping students set and achieve goals by preparing them for college eligibility and success. AVID places academically average students in advanced courses with the support of the AVID Elective Class. Students are selected based on academic and social ability, college potential, desire and determination.
Characteristics of an AVID Student
  • AVID targets students in the academic middle, earning mostly A, B, and C grades.
  • Have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.
  • Regular attendance and minimal discipline problems.
  • Are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but may be falling short of their potential currently.
  • Must be a voluntary decision by the student, NOT the parent.
 The AVID Curriculum
  • The AVID curriculum is a four year program that begins in 9th grade and continues throughout the student’s high school career. Students who were unable to begin in 9th grade do have the opportunity to submit applications at the end of their 9th or 10th grade year. AVID 11 is a prerequisite for AVID 12.
  • AVID curriculum is taught in the AVID elective class, and students use those learned strategies to increase success in all their other classes.
